Barbara Dana on:

How I Got Started

When I was a young girl I loved to write, but I didn't think about it as a career until I was in my twenties. Before that I wanted to be actress, or a cowboy. In those days cowgirls mostly just sat on horses, smiling and waving, like Dale Evans, but they didn't do much, so I chose “cowboy” instead. My childhood passions were pretty evenly balanced between horseback riding and acting in school plays and with my friends, my love of horses taking a slight lead. When I reached the age of 15 acting took over.

I started acting professionally when I was 16, transferring from The Dalton School to Quintanos' School for Young Professionals on 56th Street, next to the stage door of City Center. At this school we had academic classes from 10:00 to 2:00, leaving time for rehearsals, auditions and lessons in the afternoon. The later than usual start time allowed kids who were in shows, ballets, or concerts to get enough sleep. If we had to be out of town for film work we could take our lessons with us.

I began as a pre-teen and teen-age model, did commercials and extra work on TV, then graduated to larger parts and parts on stage and in films. In those days there were a lot of live and taped TV dramas and I did most of them. The live dramas could be scary if during your performance you thought for a moment about the fact that thousands of people were watching you.

The Belle of Amherst

Barbara Dana as Emily Dickinson in THE BELLE OF AMHERST

Beginning in the fall of '09 the author will offer a performance of William Luce's one-woman play about Emily Dickinson, originally starring Julie Harris. Ms. Dana will be performing the play at the 2009 Emily Dickinson International Conference in Canada (July 2009).

Emily Dickinson Comes Alive

"Emily Dickinson is truly alive and well and appearing on the stage of the Burt Reynolds Museum and Institute of Film and Theatre. She is here in the performance of award winning actress Barbara Dana, who breathes life and spirit into the famous poet in “The Belle of Amherst” presented by the Under-the-Bridge Players…She has been performing the part, under the direction of Austin Pendleton, on multiple stages and in multiple countries over the past few years to rave reviews and acclaim.

Dana is also the author of eight books, two about Dickinson, with the latest title being “A Voice of Her Own: Becoming Emily Dickinson”, a HarperCollins release.

Dana's delicate, sensitive yet riveting performance had the crowd at BRIFT in the palm of her hand, as she strolled through the life, musings, recollections, private thoughts and yearnings of unrequited love, of the passionate writer who barely had less than a dozen poems published in her lifetime…. Enough cannot be said of the depth and breadth of understanding Dana puts into her performance and to the poetry itself. She not only brings fresh meaning to the life of this extraordinary poet but also presents a believable view of the customs and traditions of that time in history. There is humor, desire, sadness and joy and wonder at all things nature, all wrapped up into one charming package."
